DogtoHumanYears.com is a free, no-nonsense dog age calculator that goes beyond the old "multiply by 7" rule. We use a size-based formula that reflects how differently small breeds and giant breeds actually age.

Why we built this

Every dog owner has asked this question. You look at your dog — grey muzzle, a little slower on the stairs — and wonder: how old is she, really? The classic 1 dog year = 7 human years answer has been passed around for decades, but it doesn't account for the fact that a 7-year-old Chihuahua is nowhere near as old, proportionally, as a 7-year-old Great Dane.

We built this tool to give dog owners a more honest, useful answer. One that considers your dog's breed, size, and typical lifespan — not just a flat multiplier.

How the calculator works

Our formula is based on widely-cited veterinary research on canine aging patterns. Here's the simplified breakdown:

  • The first year of a dog's life equals roughly 15 human years — dogs mature incredibly fast as puppies.
  • By the end of year two, the total is approximately 24 human years.
  • After year two, the rate slows and diverges by size: small breeds add roughly 4 human years per year, medium breeds 5, large breeds 6, and giant breeds 7.

This means a 10-year-old Chihuahua (small) is equivalent to about 56 human years, while a 10-year-old Great Dane (giant) is equivalent to about 80 human years. Very different stories for the same number of candles on the birthday cake.

The breeds we cover

Our database includes over 200 dog breeds — all AKC-recognized groups (Herding, Hound, Non-Sporting, Sporting, Terrier, Toy, Working) plus popular designer and mixed breeds like Goldendoodles, Cavapoos, and Labradoodles. Each breed is assigned a size category (Small, Medium, Large, Giant) and an average lifespan drawn from published veterinary data.

A note on accuracy

Dog aging is still an active area of research. Individual dogs vary enormously based on genetics, diet, exercise, and veterinary care. A well-looked-after small breed can live well past 18 years. The numbers you see on this calculator are estimates based on breed averages — they're a useful reference, not a prediction.

Always consult your veterinarian for advice about your specific dog's health, life stage, and care needs. No calculator replaces professional veterinary guidance.
